Dr. Wonvin Kim, a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Seong Su Kim's research group, was honored with the Grand Prize (Best Paper Award) at the 29th Spring Conference of the Korean Tribology Society in 2026.
His presentation, titled "Dynamic Stability of Water-Lubricated Composite Journal Bearings for Rim-Driven Thrusters Considering Turbulence and Elastic Deformation," presented a design space that ensures full lubrication during operation and guarantees system stability for water-lubricated composite journal bearings—a critical component of next-generation hub-type rim-driven thrusters.
The study broke the conventional academic belief that excessive bearing deformation is favorable for system stability, identifying for the first time that such benefits have distinct physical limits. Furthermore, it demonstrated that optimal system design can be achieved not only through adjusting bearing clearance and operating conditions but also through the tailored material design of the composite bearing itself. This underscores the critical importance of proper bearing material selection and expands the boundaries of conventional design by incorporating turbulence and elastic deformation as key design parameters, thereby establishing a practical and robust design guideline.
This award recognizes the outstanding nature of the research, which offers a new paradigm in water-lubricated composite journal bearing design through precise multiphysics analysis that challenges existing stereotypes. It is highly anticipated to serve as a pivotal milestone in advancing the commercialization of high-performance composite-based mechanical systems, while contributing to the localization and reliability enhancement of next-generation eco-friendly marine mobility technologies.
