Professor Heung Soo Kim's Research Team Develops an AI-Based Thermal Aging Deviation Index Estimation Technology Using Whole-Body Infrared Thermography

The research team led by Professor Heung Soo Kim at Dongguk University (First Inventor: Hikmat Yar) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology for estimating biological age and generating a Thermal Aging Deviation Index (TADI) using whole-body infrared thermographic images. The patented invention integrates non-contact infrared thermography with advanced AI algorithms to quantitatively assess an individual's thermal physiological aging status, providing a novel solution for preventive medicine, health screening, and wellness monitoring.

The proposed technology acquires whole-body infrared thermal images together with pixel-wise absolute skin temperature information and extracts statistical temperature descriptors and temperature gradient features from multiple anatomical regions of interest (ROIs), including the forehead, neck, chest, abdomen, hands, knees, and feet. A Kendall's Tau-based feature selection method identifies the most age-relevant thermal biomarkers, while a stacking ensemble model combining XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, Random Forest, Support Vector Regression (SVR), and other machine learning models accurately estimates biological age.

Based on the difference between the estimated biological age and the subject's chronological age, the system generates a Thermal Aging Deviation Index that objectively determines whether thermal aging is accelerated or delayed. Furthermore, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques are incorporated to identify the thermal biomarkers contributing most significantly to biological age estimation, thereby improving the interpretability and reliability of the prediction results.

The proposed invention enables quantitative, radiation-free, and non-contact assessment of biological aging and has broad potential applications in preventive healthcare, medical screening, metabolic risk assessment, personalized healthcare, wellness monitoring, and digital healthcare services.

Professor Heung Soo Kim stated, "This invention presents a novel AI-driven framework that combines whole-body infrared thermography with biological age estimation to objectively evaluate individual aging status. We expect this technology to contribute significantly to the advancement of precision medicine and personalized digital healthcare in the future."
